ECMWF, the world’s leading centre for global medium-range weather forecasts, is launching an online programme to develop innovative weather-related technologies.
Summer of Weather Code is open to all developers, startups, weather professionals and scientists who are interested in weather forecasts and the visualisation of weather-related data and who are keen to collaborate with world-class scientists.
Together, let’s unleash the potential of ECMWF’s open source software and its extensive data archive.
ECMWF presents exciting challenges aimed at improving how weather and climate data and related software are provided to user communities. The new developments will help ECMWF to support national weather services in its Member and Co-operating States.
13 challenges.
5 selected projects.
£5,000 grant to build each solution.
WILDFIRE APP
Proof of concept that evaluates and reviews the optimal rules and applies them to optimise the request without loading MARS system.
Develop a web/mobile app facilitating the use of fire forecast data products.
DATA SOURCE IDENTIFIER
Develop a tool to search the web systematically, identifying data sources for observed environmental data.
DATA EXTRACTION
Develop a user-friendly app/tool to assist in setting up the automated collection of observed data from defined websites.
FUSE DRIVER FOR NETCDF
Develop a user-friendly app/tool to assist in setting up the automated collection of observed data from defined websites.
INNOVATIVE VISUALISATION
Investigate new ways of presenting meteorological forecast data and the probabilistic aspect of it. The final goal is to get the result displayed on the interactive Weather Wall and globe at ECMWF and any other public exhibits.
ENHANCED GIS AREA SELECTION WIDGET
Provide a widget to select and display areas on a map that can be utilised across existing web applications at ECMWF.
MARS REQUEST OPTIMIZER PROTOTYPE
Proof of concept that evaluates and reviews the optimal rules and applies them to optimise the request without loading MARS system.
ECFS DATA BACKUP TOOL
Allow users to easily back-up data to ECFS.
SYNOPTIC VIEW OF ECFLOW SUITES
An alternative design and monitoring tool for ecFlow.
MULTICENTRE QUALITY MONITORING TOOL
Facilitate the access and use of observation quality monitoring information from other NWP centres.
FUSE DRIVER FOR NETCDF
Represent the hierarchical structure of a NetCDF dataset as a virtual file system. Easily manipulate NetCDF dataset structure using common filesystem operations and general-purpose Unix tools.
MIGRATION OF ECPOINT-CAL TO PYTHON AND DEVELOPMENT OF ITS GUI
1) Translate ecPoint-Cal into a widely-used, free scripting language to increase user uptake of the calibration software.
2) Build a GUI to create a much more comfortable, interactive and user-friendly environment.
VISUALISING FORECAST VERIFICATION
Easily organise and present plots of existing verifications and diagnostics (VaD) used to assess numerical weather forecast models performance in a simplified format similar to e.g. forms in https://airtable.com.
CODE2DOC4Wiki
Allow users to easily back-up data to ECFS.
To enable publishing of reference documentation for software packages in Confluence.
